How to Get to Golfito

Golfito is served by a small domestic airport (Golfito Airport, GLF) with regular regional flights from San José; the main international gateway is Juan Santamaría (SJO) in San José. Overland access is possible by long-distance bus but takes most of a day from the capital.

By Air

Golfito Airport (GLF): Domestic flights to Golfito are operated by regional carriers (Sansa). Flight time from San José (SJO) is about 40-50 minutes; expect typical one-way fares in the roughly USD 80-150 range depending on season. From Golfito Airport the town centre is a short taxi ride (around 5-10 minutes) - fares are small (a few thousand CRC) and local taxis are the fastest option.

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): International arrivals usually come into SJO (San José). From SJO you can connect to Golfito by a domestic flight (see GLF) or by long-distance bus: the bus trip runs roughly 7-9 hours depending on route and traffic.

By Train & Bus

Train: Costa Rica does not offer intercity passenger rail service to Golfito; there is no practical train option for reaching Golfito from San José or other major cities.

Bus: Long-distance buses run between San José (major terminals such as Terminal 7-10/Tica Bus departure points) and Golfito. Journey time is typically 7-9 hours; schedules are limited and depend on the carrier and season. Tickets are inexpensive compared with flying (expect low-to-mid hundreds to low thousands of Costa Rican colones); buses are the common budget option.

How to Get Around Golfito #

Golfito is compact and easily explored on foot around the port and town center. Short taxi rides and local colectivos serve nearby communities; taxis and local shuttles are the most common way to reach remote lodges and beaches. Renting a car is useful if you want to explore the Osa Peninsula and national parks, since public connections can be infrequent.
