Glanum is an ancient Roman and pre-Roman settlement located near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in Provence, France, known for its well-preserved Roman monuments. The site preserves visible structural remains from the Roman period that illustrate urban and funerary architecture.

Above-ground Roman monuments such as a multi-tiered funerary monument and a triumphal arch, together with street remains and foundations of public buildings. Visitors typically view these standing monuments and walk the archaeological park that exposes street outlines and foundations.

Glanum developed as a settlement in the ancient period and later became Romanised, leaving a mix of pre-Roman and Roman remains. Archaeological work over the 19th and 20th centuries has focused on excavating and stabilising the standing monuments and urban layout.

The site lies just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in the Bouches-du-Rhône department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, in southern France, and is easily reached from local roads serving the Alpilles region.

• Mausoleum of the Julii: a well-preserved Roman mausoleum from the late Republican or early Imperial period that is one of the site’s most recognisable monuments, notable for its three-tiered structure and sculptural decoration.
• Triumphal Arch: a triumphal arch from the Roman period that once marked an important route through the city and remains visible as a free-standing stone arch with classical ornamentation.

Glanum sits about 2 km southwest of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. From the town center follow signs for Route de Glanum (D99); there’s a small paid car park beside the site. Many visitors walk (roughly 25-30 minutes) from Place du Forum in Saint-Rémy along a shaded lane. Regional bus services stop in Saint-Rémy; from Avignon TGV station take a local bus or a 25-minute taxi ride.

• Arrive at opening to walk the site before tour buses arrive-the Mausoleum and Triumphal Arch are easiest to photograph with soft morning light.
• Walk the loop from the Musée de Glanum to the archaeological site rather than coming by car; the short descent through Aleppo pines feels like stepping back.
• Look down: many stones still bear Roman mason's marks and smoothing from cart wheels-small details that most visitors miss.
