- Intercity bus (~2,000-8,000 RWF) - Buses link Kigali with towns in Southern Province; they are inexpensive and commonly used by locals and travelers. Expect a 3-4 hour trip from Kigali to the Gikongoro/Nyamagabe area depending on route and stops.
- Private taxi / Transfer (~30,000-80,000 RWF) - Private hires provide a faster, door‑to‑door option and are useful when travelling with luggage or on tight schedules. Negotiate a fixed price before departure - expect to pay significantly more than bus fares.
- Motorbike taxi (moto) (~200-2,000 RWF) - Motorcycle taxis are very common for short trips within towns and to nearby villages; they’re fast and inexpensive but require caution and a helmet if available. Not recommended for long intercity travel.
- Car hire (~50-120 USD/day) - Renting a car is recommended if you want to explore off the main bus routes. Roads on main highways are generally good, but secondary roads can be rough and require careful driving, especially in the rainy season.
- Bicycle (Varies (rental possible)) - Bicycles are used locally for short distances and by adventurous visitors for scenic rides, but hilly terrain around Nyamagabe makes some routes challenging. Plan routes and water/food stops carefully.
- Walking - Town centres and local markets are compact and easily explored on foot. Walking is the best way to experience daily life in Gikongoro but avoid long stretches on main roads without shoulders.
