Ghibli Museum
Museum Museum dedicated to Studio Ghibli's animation art
A small museum in Tokyo’s Mitaka showcasing Studio Ghibli animation, with exhibits, a rooftop catbus figure and a short private‑theatre film program; tickets must be booked in advance and often sell out.
Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, is a small museum devoted to the work of Studio Ghibli and its animators, opened in 2001. It was developed with strong involvement from Hayao Miyazaki and presents the studio’s creative process and artworks.
The museum houses permanent exhibition galleries showing original sketches, models and displays about animation techniques, plus rotating temporary exhibitions. A dedicated small cinema, the Saturn Theatre, screens short animated films produced exclusively for the museum, typically 10-20 minutes long.
There is a distinctive rooftop garden featuring the large robot statue from Laputa: Castle in the Sky and views over Inokashira Park. The museum enforces date-specific tickets sold in advance and restricts photography in many indoor areas.
Located in Mitaka in western Tokyo, the museum sits adjacent to Inokashira Park and is a short walk from Mitaka Station, making it accessible from central Tokyo by train.
- Advance Tickets: Tickets are date- and time-specific and must be purchased in advance; entry is not sold at the museum on the day of visit.
- Exclusive Short Films: Short animated films shown in the museum cinema are exclusive to the museum and rotate periodically.
- Photography and Photo Spot: Photography is restricted inside many exhibition spaces; a popular photo spot is the rooftop robot statue overlooking Inokashira Park.
