Gezira (commonly known as Zamalek) is a river island in the Nile at central Cairo that forms an affluent residential and cultural district. The island contains major cultural institutions and private clubs set within a mainly urban fabric.

Key sites on the island include the Cairo Opera House cultural complex, the long‑standing Gezira Sporting Club, and tree‑lined streets of the Zamalek residential district with galleries, embassies and restaurants. The island is compact and walkable, used for leisure, culture and sports.

The island has been developed since the 19th and 20th centuries as a planned urban district and recreational area for Cairo’s elite, evolving into a centre for cultural institutions in the late 20th century with the establishment of the Opera House and related venues.

Gezira lies in the Nile between the downtown Cairo mainland and the western riverbank, immediately north of the downtown bridge crossings and close to central Cairo landmarks.

• Zamalek district: The Zamalek neighbourhood, a primarily residential and diplomatic district known for leafy streets, galleries and embassies that occupies much of the island’s urban fabric.

Gezira Island sits in central Cairo between the Nile’s two branches and is accessed via several bridges from both west and east bank Cairo. Walking from Tahrir Square or using Cairo taxis and local buses will bring visitors to the island; Zamalek is its northern, more touristed neighborhood.

• Walk across the Qasr al-Nil or 6th October Bridge from downtown Cairo to reach Gezira Island and then head south toward the Opera House rather than the touristy northern strip.
• Visit the Cairo Opera House or a concert at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina‑style cultural venues on the island to see local cultural life in action.
• Rent a bicycle to explore the island's quieter residential streets and the Gezira Sporting Club area.
