Gerlachovský štít Mountain

Gerlachovský štít is the highest mountain in Slovakia and the highest summit of the Carpathian range, with an elevation of 2,655 metres. It is the dominant peak of the High Tatras and a central feature of Slovak alpine mountaineering.

The peak attracts mountaineers and experienced hikers for alpine climbing, ridge routes and technical scrambles on its faces. Standard approaches require route-finding and exposure management; guided ascents are common due to route difficulty and park regulations.

The mountain has long been part of High Tatras climbing history and Alpine-style exploration since the 19th century, with evolving route development and mountain rescue infrastructure. Its name associates it with the nearby settlement of Gerlachov and the surrounding Tatras communities.

It sits in the High Tatras within the Tatra National Park in northern Slovakia’s Prešov Region, forming part of a compact high-mountain area of sharp peaks, glacial valleys and alpine lakes.

Gerlachovský štít (the highest peak of the High Tatras) is reached via the High Tatras mountain area. The usual gateway is Poprad (Poprad‑Tatry airport and train station); from Poprad take regional roads or buses into the Vysoké Tatry resort towns (Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec, Štrbské Pleso) which serve trailheads.

Ascent of Gerlachovský štít is technical and in Slovakia is typically done with a licensed mountain guide; parking and trailheads are reached by car or local bus from the Tatras towns and hiking begins from the relevant valley trailheads.

• Do not attempt a solo ascent-climbing Gerlachovský štít requires a licensed mountain guide, so book a certified guide in advance.
• Use the cable car to Skalnaté pleso (from Tatranská Lomnica) to shorten the approach and reserve the early slot so you can start the summit section before afternoon storms develop.
• Plan your ascent for summer months (generally July-September) when routes are most likely to be snow‑free and mountain services are operating.
