Black Sea Coast (Batumi, Kobuleti, Adjara)

Beach season starts to feel possible in May as sea temperatures edge up and sunny stretches lengthen; Batumi’s cafés and terraces fill with locals. Heat is usually comfortable, roughly 20-25°C, but sudden heavy showers remain a feature and humidity climbs, so pack a light rain shell. Boat trips along the coast become more reliable, though occasional storms can still cancel excursions; May is lively without high summer crowds and is excellent for early outdoor festivals.

Imereti & Samegrelo (Kutaisi, Gelati, Martvili)

May can feel almost Mediterranean: warm, longer days with daytime highs from the high teens into the low twenties and the region is lush after spring rains. This is an excellent month for visiting Okatse and Kinchkha gorges, with waterfalls at good flow and comfortable hiking conditions. Popular itineraries to cultural sites see more travellers, so book guesthouses in advance and bring a rain jacket for the odd shower.

Tbilisi & Kakheti (Eastern Georgia - capital and wine country)

By late spring the warmth is inviting: May sees daytime temperatures climb to the low 20s°C in Tbilisi and Kakheti, with long days ideal for sightseeing and winery tours. Rtveli (harvest) is still months away, but cellars begin setting up tastings and vineyard walks are comfortable before high summer heat. Pack light layers, sun protection and a bottle of local wine to enjoy al fresco as evenings are cool and pleasant.

Greater Caucasus & Svaneti (Stepantsminda/Kazbegi, Mestia, Ushguli)

Late spring in May opens the highlands for trekking in earnest: by mid to late May lower trails are usually clear and alpine meadows start blooming, though some higher passes remain snowbound. Ushguli’s remote access eases as roads thaw, and the Ushba and Tetnuldi ridgelines become accessible with crampons for fit hikers. Mosquitoes can appear in damp meadows, so bring repellent and warm layers for cool nights at altitude.

Southern Highlands & Javakheti (Borjomi, Akhaltsikhe, Javakheti Plateau)

May makes the plateau accessible and the southern highlands have long daylight and crisp, stable days ideal for hiking and nature watching: daytime temperatures often 15-20°C at moderate elevations. Paravani and Tabatskuri lakes fill and attract waterbirds; spring pastures fill with grazing livestock and roadside markets sell new cheeses. Expect chilly nights and occasional rain; this is a rewarding month for birders and rural exploration with fewer visitors than better-known regions.
