Gebelein

Gebelein is an archaeological locality in Upper Egypt known for Predynastic cemeteries and later rock-cut tombs located in Luxor Governorate. The site produced well-preserved human remains and burial assemblages that are important for study of Predynastic and early dynastic Egypt.

Visitors can see the landscape of sand-covered mounds and rock-cut burial chambers that mark long-term mortuary use of the area. Archaeological excavations at Gebelein recovered mummified remains and grave goods that have been studied and curated by museums and research institutions.

The site was used for burials in the late Predynastic period and continued to see funerary activity and reuse in later historical periods, leaving a multi-layered archaeological record. Excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries documented the burials, and finds were transported to external museum collections for conservation.

Gebelein stands on the east bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt within Luxor Governorate, situated among the wider landscape of ancient Thebes and other archaeological sites in the region.
