The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is a principal Ottoman-era mosque in Sarajevo, built in the early 16th century by the Ottoman governor Gazi Husrev-beg. It is one of the city’s most important religious and historical buildings and anchors a larger complex of civic and educational structures.
Visitors find a large single-domed prayer hall, a tall minaret, and a courtyard; the adjacent medrese and library were part of the original endowment and served educational and communal functions. The complex is a focal point of the Baščaršija historic quarter and remains an active place of worship.
Commissioned and funded by Gazi Husrev-beg, the mosque and its vakuf institutions were established in the 1530s to serve Sarajevo’s Muslim community. The building has been repaired and restored several times over its history, including significant work after wartime damage in the 1990s.
