Main image

Garden of the Gods is a public park of dramatic red sandstone rock formations on the western edge of Colorado Springs, Colorado, known for its striking vertical fins and spires. The park covers roughly 1,300 acres and is designated as a National Natural Landmark.

The park’s highlights are the large, sculpted sandstone formations that rise directly from the prairie - some formations reach roughly 200 to 300 feet in height. There are paved and unpaved trails, a main loop drive, rock-climbing routes in designated areas, and interpretive signage; the paved Central Garden loop is about 1.5 miles. The Visitor and Nature Center provides exhibits, a small theatre, and orientation for trails and driving routes.

The formations are geologic rather than man-made; the land was donated to the city of Colorado Springs in the early 20th century with a stipulation for public use and preservation. The park has since been managed for public access, recreation, and conservation and was recognized as a National Natural Landmark in the 20th century.

Garden of the Gods sits at the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains and the Front Range, within the city limits of Colorado Springs and close to Pikes Peak. The park is immediately northwest of central Colorado Springs and is accessed from major city roads.

  • Admission: Admission to the park is free; the Visitor and Nature Center charges for some programs and has maps, restrooms, and a staffed information desk.
  • Best viewing times: Best light for photography is at sunrise and sunset when the red sandstone contrasts with the sky; popular viewpoints can become crowded midday.
