Galleria Palatina

The Galleria Palatina occupies the principal picture galleries of Florence’s Palazzo Pitti and displays an extensive collection of paintings assembled by the Medici and their successors. The galleries present works from the Renaissance through the Baroque in historic rooms that once served as the grand ducal apartments.

Visitors view large-format canvases, portraiture and courtly decorative ensembles arranged in ceremonial rooms with period furnishings and frescoed ceilings. The display emphasizes Italian masters alongside important Flemish and Spanish works collected by the grand dukes.

The core collection was formed by the Medici family and expanded by later dynasties; the palace rooms were adapted in the 17th and 18th centuries to showcase the ducal holdings. Today the Galleria Palatina is managed as part of Florence’s state museums and is commonly visited together with the adjacent Boboli Gardens.

Situated on the south bank of the Arno in central Florence, the palace sits in the Oltrarno district a short walk from the Ponte Vecchio and other historic sites.

• Location Note: The collection is housed within the 16th-century Palazzo Pitti on the south side of the Arno and is adjacent to the Boboli Gardens, allowing combined visits to both sites.
• Masterworks: Paintings by masters such as Titian, Raphael and Rubens form the core of the galleries and are displayed in historic, frescoed rooms designed for courtly viewing.
