Galite Islands
Island Remote Tunisian archipelago with rich marine biodiversity
Off Tunisia’s northern coast, the Galite Islands form a rugged archipelago of cliffs, sea caves and sparse vegetation. Sailors and divers visit for clear water, seabird colonies and occasional charter trips from Bizerte and nearby coastal ports.
The Galite Islands are a small archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea off Tunisia’s northern coast, administratively part of Bizerte Governorate. They are a compact group of rocky islets dominated by one main island and several smaller rocks and reefs.
A rugged, largely uninhabited landscape of cliffs, coves and reefs characterizes the islands; visitors find dramatic coastal scenery, seabird colonies and clear offshore waters. There are no tourist facilities on the islands, and visits are typically short landings or boat-based wildlife and snorkeling trips.
The archipelago has long been noted on nautical charts as a navigational hazard and occasional shelter for small craft; it has not supported permanent, large-scale settlement in modern times. Control and administration have been under Tunisian authorities since the country’s establishment as a state.
The islands sit off the northern coast of Tunisia within Bizerte Governorate in the Mediterranean, separated from mainland Tunisia by open water. The nearest sizable Tunisian coastal settlements are on the mainland of northern Tunisia.
- Access: The islands are largely uninhabited and are best reached by private boat; there are no regular ferry services.
- Wildlife: Important nesting sites for seabirds and habitat for Mediterranean marine life, so shore landing can be restricted at times.
What to See #
- La Galite (main island): The largest island in the group, occupying most of the archipelago's land area and consisting of steep, rocky terrain with cliffs and small coves.
