Frederiksborg Castle
Castle Large Renaissance castle housing Denmark's Museum of National History
A Dutch Renaissance castle in Hillerød set on a lake, now the Museum of National History with portrait galleries and period rooms. Visitors tour grand halls and walk formal baroque gardens.
Frederiksborg Castle is an early 17th-century royal palace in Hillerød, north of Copenhagen, constructed as a monumental residence for King Christian IV. Built mainly between 1602 and 1620, it is a leading example of Danish Renaissance architecture.
Today the castle houses the Museum of National History with displays of portraits, historical painting and decorative arts spanning several centuries. The building stands on an island in a large ornamental lake and is framed by formal Baroque gardens that have been restored using historic layouts.
The castle was damaged by a major fire in the 19th century and subsequently restored and repurposed as a national museum, with wealthy patrons involved in its conservation. Its function shifted from a royal residence to a national museum focused on Danish political and cultural history.
Frederiksborg Castle is in Hillerød, approximately 35-40 kilometres north of Copenhagen, and is served by regional trains and roads linking it to the capital.
- Scale and restoration: Built by King Christian IV in the early 17th century, the castle is the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia and was substantially rebuilt after a major 19th-century fire.
What to See #
- Museum of National History: The Museum of National History occupies the castle and presents Danish history from the 16th century to the present through portraiture, period rooms and document collections.
- Gardens and lake: The castle is set on an island in a large reflecting lake and is surrounded by formal Baroque gardens reconstructed from historic plans.
