Forte de Cacheu is a historic Portuguese fortification located in the town of Cacheu on the northwestern coast of present-day Guinea-Bissau. The fort marks the site of a long-standing Atlantic trading post established during the Portuguese colonial period.
The structure survives as a stone fort at the mouth of the Cacheu River and is one of the best-known colonial-era landmarks in the area. The fort’s position at the river entrance reflects its role in maritime trade and coastal control.
The fort was built by Portuguese colonial authorities to secure and regulate trade along the Cacheu River and the surrounding coastline. Over centuries the site functioned as a trading post within the Portuguese colonial network in West Africa.
