Fort Stanton (New Mexico)

Fort Stanton is a 19th-century United States Army fort in Lincoln County, New Mexico, established in 1855. It is now preserved as a historic site with a collection of surviving military buildings from the frontier period.

The complex includes a parade ground and multiple restored structures such as barracks, officers’ quarters and a hospital; on-site interpretation explains military life and frontier operations. Visitors can join guided tours and walk short trails around the fort compound to view the main buildings and interpretive displays.

The Army established and garrisoned the fort as a frontier post in the mid 19th century; it served as a military installation during the Indian Wars and later federal periods before being preserved for its historic value. Over time the site transitioned from active military use to historic preservation under state management.

The fort sits in Lincoln County in southern New Mexico within the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains, near the Lincoln National Forest and the historic town of Lincoln.
