Fort Drum (Philippines)

Fort Drum is a fortified concrete island built on an artificial foundation at the entrance to Manila Bay in the Philippines, commonly described as a “concrete battleship.” It was constructed by the United States Army in the early 20th century as a coastal defense installation.

The fort’s low-profile, heavily reinforced structure housed large-caliber coastal artillery and enclosed gun emplacements designed to control access to the bay. It saw combat during World War II when Japanese forces captured it in 1942 and Allied forces retook the area later in the war; the fort was heavily fought over and sustained significant damage.

Built during the U.S. colonial period in the Philippines, Fort Drum was part of a network of coastal defenses intended to protect Manila and Subic Bays. Its design and wartime history make it a distinctive example of early 20th-century coastal fortification engineering.

The fort sits at the mouth of Manila Bay near Corregidor Island in Cavite/Metro Manila waters; it is commonly viewed on boat tours to Corregidor and as part of Manila Bay historical excursions.
