Fo Guang Shan is a large Buddhist monastic order and temple complex in Dashu District near Kaohsiung (Takao), Taiwan, founded in 1967. It functions as the headquarters for the Fo Guang Shan organisation and includes a major museum complex and extensive temple precincts.
The site contains large ceremonial halls, meditation buildings, exhibition spaces and the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, which opened in 2011. The museum has multiple exhibition halls and a prominent central Buddha display, and the overall complex is designed for worship, education, and cultural events; it attracts both pilgrims and tourists in significant numbers.
The order and complex were established by Venerable Master Hsing Yun in 1967 and expanded over subsequent decades into an international Buddhist movement with educational and cultural programs. The Buddha Museum was added in the 21st century to provide exhibition space and enshrinement facilities.
Fo Guang Shan sits in the suburban/rural outskirts of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan. The complex is accessible by road from Kaohsiung city and is set within landscaped grounds and low hills to the east of the urban area.
