Fasil Ghebbi, Gondar Region

Fasil Ghebbi is the historic royal enclosure at Gondar in northern Ethiopia, formed by a cluster of castles, palaces and ancillary buildings erected from the 17th century when Gondar served as an imperial capital. The complex illustrates a distinct imperial architectural ensemble associated with Emperor Fasilides and his successors.

Major structures include the central castle attributed to Fasilides and a series of palaces and halls added by later rulers. The compound functioned as the seat of imperial administration and court life during Gondar’s period as the capital.

Construction and expansion took place from the 17th century onward under successive emperors; the arrangement of buildings and fortifying walls reflects the evolving needs of a royal court. Over time the site became the symbolic centre of Gondar and retains much of its original layout.
