Faizabad Travel Guide
City City in Uttar Pradesh with historical significance
Faizabad’s faded nawabi mansions and the Shahi Qila recall an 18th-century court; pilgrims and history fans pass through on the way to Ayodhya’s temples. Stroll Gulab Bari’s mausoleums, eat kebabs at old stalls, and watch ferry traffic on the Ghaghra at dusk.
Why Visit Faizabad? #
Historic Faizabad draws travelers interested in Awadh’s nawabi heritage and its close connection to Ayodhya’s temples across the Ghaghara. Colorful bazaars and colonial-era gardens such as Gulab Bari give the town quiet historic character, while the food scene highlights Awadhi specialties like kebabs and biryani. Short riverfront walks and seasonal processions offer windows into local culture. The town’s compact size makes it easy to explore at a relaxed pace.
Who's Faizabad For?
Faizabad sits close to Ayodhya and has a strong Awadhi food tradition: kebabs, biryanis and sweet shops around the old bazaars and Sarayu ghats. Street stalls and small mid-range eateries offer rich flavors at very affordable prices.
This is a pilgrimage and family-oriented destination - river ghats, temples and calm guesthouses around the old town suit multi-generational trips. Local festivals and easy day visits to nearby Ayodhya make it practical for family itineraries on modest budgets.
Sarayu riverfront walks and quieter temple precincts give couples peaceful early-morning or sunset moments. Small riverside cafés and heritage parks near the old city provide low-cost, intimate spots away from big-city crowds.
The Sarayu and surrounding agricultural countryside offer gentle riverside scenery and birdlife; short countryside drives reveal rural Uttar Pradesh landscapes. Not a wilderness hub, but rewarding for relaxed nature strolls and local seasonal birdwatching.

How to Get to Faizabad
Faizabad (near Ayodhya) is reached mainly by rail and road, with the nearest major airport in Lucknow (Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, LKO). The city's rail hub is Faizabad Junction; many visitors transfer from Lucknow by train, bus or private taxi.
Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (LKO): The nearest major airport is in Lucknow (LKO). From the airport you can take a prepaid taxi or app taxi direct to Faizabad/Ayodhya - the drive is about 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic and takes roughly 130-140 km; expect around INR 2,000-3,500 for a one‑way sedan taxi. Alternatively, take the airport shuttle or a short taxi (20-30 minutes) to Lucknow Charbagh railway station and catch a train to Faizabad (see train card) - the airport→station transfer is about INR 150-300 by taxi and 30-40 minutes.
Train: Faizabad Junction (FD) is the main rail hub serving the city; some services also call at nearby Ayodhya stations. Regular trains connect Faizabad with Lucknow (about 1.5-3 hours on different services), and there are longer-distance trains to Delhi, Varanasi and other cities. Fares depend on class (unreserved/second sitting to AC tiers) - short regional journeys are often inexpensive (from a few dozen rupees for general class up to a few hundred for reserved/AC seats).
Bus: State-run UPSRTC buses and private intercity buses run to Faizabad from Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Sultanpur and other regional towns. Travel time from Lucknow by bus is typically around 2.5-4 hours depending on service and route; fares are modest (short intercity trips often between INR 100-400). Within the district, local buses and shared jeeps provide low-cost point‑to‑point travel; expect variable schedules and stops.
How to Get Around Faizabad
Getting around Faizabad/Ayodhya is easiest by short auto‑rickshaw rides, cycle rickshaws for narrow lanes and walking in the core temple areas. For longer trips or airport transfers, prebook a taxi or use the regular trains and intercity buses to Lucknow and other regional centres.
- Auto‑rickshaw (20-200 INR) - Auto‑rickshaws are the most practical way to get around town for short to medium trips. Negotiate or insist on the meter where possible; typical fares for short rides are inexpensive but can add up if you're haggling. They're faster than buses in congested areas and handy for reaching temples, markets and the train station.
- Cycle rickshaw (10-60 INR) - Cycle rickshaws are useful for very short hops in older parts of the city and narrow lanes where motor vehicles can't go. Fares are low and negotiable; use them for market runs or short sightseeing legs. Expect slower travel and limited space for luggage.
- Taxis & app taxis (200-3,500 INR) - Metered taxis and app-based cabs (Ola, Uber) can be found, though app availability is more reliable in Lucknow than in Faizabad; for intercity transfers to/from Lucknow many travellers prebook a cab. Taxis are the most comfortable option for early-morning temple visits or luggage-heavy transfers - expect higher fares than autos (see Getting There estimates).
- City / intercity buses (10-400 INR) - UPSRTC and private bus services cover Faizabad and the surrounding region; buses are the cheapest option for longer routes and connect to Lucknow, Sultanpur and Gorakhpur. Services vary in comfort from basic non‑AC buses to semi‑deluxe coaches; schedules can be irregular so allow buffer time. Use the main bus stand for departures and ask locally for up‑to‑date timetables.
- Local trains (5-400 INR) - Short-distance passenger trains link Faizabad with Lucknow and neighbouring towns; they're a fast, inexpensive way to travel between regional centres and avoid road traffic. Check the timetable in advance - some services are slow passenger locals, others are faster express trains requiring reservations. Stations to know include Faizabad Junction and nearby Ayodhya stops for temple access.
- Walking - The central areas and temple precincts around Faizabad/Ayodhya are compact and pleasant to explore on foot for short distances. Walking is the easiest way to move between markets, ghats and close temple sites; carry water, wear comfortable shoes and be ready for crowds during festivals.
