Northern Highlands (Tigray, Amhara, Simien Mountains, Lalibela, Gondar)

June is when the Kiremt (main) rains begin to dominate - heavy, fairly reliable downpours arrive in Amhara and the northern highlands, swelling rivers and washing dust from the air. Simien and Ras Dashen routes can be wet and cold; some mountain huts close or become harder to reach, so confirm services before setting out. Photography of thundering waterfalls and lush terraces is rewarding; however, be ready for cancelled rural buses and muddy roads.

Central Highlands & Rift Escarpment (Addis Ababa, Debre Birhan, Adama, Awash)

June is the onset of the Kiremt rains for much of the central highlands: expect regular afternoon storms that can be intense and bring daytime temperatures down noticeably. The Awash and Rift Valley see rising river levels; some day trips to hot springs or gorge viewpoints may be curtailed by safety concerns. Plan buffer days around scheduled transfers and carry a rain cover for luggage when traveling by road.

Bale Mountains & Southeastern Highlands (Bale, Sidamo, Yirgacheffe, Harenna Forest)

June marks a shift toward the heavier Kiremt rains in the Bale area, with frequent, sometimes heavy showers especially on the windward slopes. The Harenna Forest and lower valleys become noticeably wet; the Aniya and Goba approaches can be boggy and slow-going. For high-altitude trekking, consider shorter day hikes or seek local guides aware of mountain weather windows and bring waterproof gear.

Southern Highlands & Omo Valley (Arba Minch, Jinka, Konso, Omo River)

June is within the Kiremt season for much of Ethiopia and the Omo Valley sees sustained rains that make many dirt roads treacherous and limit access to remote tribal communities. Boat and road connections are frequently altered by high water; trek plans should be scaled back or routed with experienced local operators. For photographers, the rivers and waterfalls are full and the countryside is vivid, but expect travel to be slower and wetter.

Eastern Lowlands & Afar/Danakil (Afar Depression, Danakil Depression, Mille, Dire Dawa, Somali border)

June begins the hotter pre-monsoon phase in eastern Ethiopia and the Somali border regions, with daytime temperatures often severe and humidity rising in coastal-influenced areas. Overland travel through remote lowland tracks can be affected by dust storms and degraded road surfaces; flights to outlying towns may be preferred where possible. For safety, travel with experienced operators who know the seasonal conditions and water logistics.

Western Lowlands & Gambela (Gambela, Benishangul-Gumuz, Metekel, Blue Nile headwaters)

June is within the wet Kiremt for the west: heavy, sometimes prolonged rains turn trails to impassable mud and rivers to fast-flowing channels, challenging travel logistics and boat access. Wildlife movements shift with the floods, and some camps or research stations may reduce services during peak rains. If you must be in the region, travel light and rely on local operators accustomed to the wet conditions.
