Eski Saray
Palace Former Ottoman palace in Istanbul's historic peninsula
Former Ottoman ‘Old Palace’ in Istanbul; of interest to historians researching early imperial administration and palace archaeology.
Eski Saray, literally the “Old Palace,” was the early Ottoman imperial palace established in Constantinople after the 1453 conquest. It served as a principal royal residence and administrative centre for the sultan in the decades immediately following the capture of the city.
The palace complex was gradually superseded by the construction of Topkapi Palace and other Ottoman building projects, after which the older palace lost its primary residential role and parts of it were repurposed or demolished. Archaeological and historical records place its foundation in the mid-15th century under Mehmed II.
The remains and historical footprint of Eski Saray lie within the historic peninsula of Istanbul, on the same general landform that contains later Ottoman palaces and the major Byzantine monuments around Sultanahmet.
- Founder and period: Built by Mehmed II shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople
How to Get to Eski Saray #
The historic area associated with Eski Saray is on Istanbul’s peninsula (Sarayburnu/Beyazıt area). Visitors should reach Sultanahmet or Eminönü by tram (T1) and walk to the surrounding streets; much of the palace’s footprint is now overlain by later Ottoman and Republican structures.
Tips for Visiting Eski Saray #
- The historic footprint of the Eski Saray overlaps busy parts of Istanbul; combine a visit with nearby sites like the Hagia Sophia and Topkapi to understand the urban layering.
- Bring a local history guide to explain how the Old Palace's functions were folded into the Topkapi complex after the mid‑15th century.
- Look for the toponyms in Ottoman-era maps - the palace's legacy survives in names, not always in stones.
Best Time to Visit Eski Saray #
Spring and autumn are the best times to walk the historic peninsula and to trace the Old Palace's shadow through the city.
