Erligang culture

The Erligang culture is a Bronze Age archaeological culture of the central Yellow River region in China, conventionally dated to about 1600-1400 BCE. It is an important early urban and metallurgical phase in northern China’s archaeological sequence.

Characteristic features include large walled settlements, specialised bronze metallurgy and standardized ceramic types; the cultural pattern is visible at multiple sites across Henan and neighbouring provinces. Archaeological remains show planning and craft specialisation on a scale larger than preceding local cultures.

Archaeologists regard Erligang as a successor to earlier Bronze Age complexes in the region and as part of the broader early Shang-period developments. The type-site near Zhengzhou and numerous satellite sites have been excavated since the mid-20th century, producing the characteristic bronze and ceramic assemblages.

Sites attributed to the culture are concentrated in central Henan and adjacent parts of the North China Plain, with the type-site located near the modern city of Zhengzhou.

• Workshop and settlement sites: Regional workshop and settlement sites across the Yellow River basin, where bronze casting, pottery production and urban layouts characteristic of the culture have been found.
