How to Get to Ercsi#
Ercsi is best reached via Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD) or by rail from Budapest. The town has a MÁV station with regular regional services; arriving at Budapest and continuing by train is the simplest option.
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD): The main international gateway for central Hungary. From BUD take the AirportBus 100E to central Budapest (Deák Ferenc tér) - ticket around 900 HUF, journey 35-45 minutes - then transfer to MÁV regional trains to Ercsi (see train card). A taxi from BUD to Ercsi takes about 45-60 minutes and typically costs roughly 8,000-12,000 HUF.
Sármellék / Hévíz-Balaton Airport (SOB): Seasonal/charter flights operate here in summer. From SOB the simplest option is a taxi to Balatonalmádi or Siófok then a regional train/bus; taxi 30-50 EUR and travel time to the Lake Balaton towns ~30-60 minutes (train/bus connections vary seasonally).
Train: Ercsi has a MÁV station on the Budapest-Pusztaszabolcs line (Ercsi vasútállomás). From Budapest (Déli or Kelenföld) regional trains reach Ercsi in about 35-55 minutes; typical second-class fares are modest (roughly 600-1,200 HUF one-way, depending on train and discounts).
Bus: Local Volánbusz services link Ercsi with nearby towns (Dunaújváros, Rácalmás) and bus stops close to the station. Bus journeys to/from Budapest require a change and take about 60-90 minutes; fares are generally in the low hundreds to a thousand HUF range.
How to Get Around Ercsi#
Regional MÁV trains are the easiest way to reach and move around Ercsi; services from Budapest are frequent enough for day trips. Taxis or rental cars are useful for early/late arrivals and for visiting smaller nearby villages.
- Train (MÁV) (600-1,200 HUF) - Regional trains stop at Ercsi station and provide the most reliable link to Budapest and neighbouring towns. Trains from Budapest Déli or Kelenföld take about 35-55 minutes. Buy tickets at stations or via the MÁV app; watch for faster InterRegio services which may require reservations.
- Bus (Volánbusz / local) (300-1,000 HUF) - Local buses connect Ercsi with surrounding villages and with Dunaújváros where you can change for long-distance services. Buses are inexpensive but slower than trains and can be infrequent on weekends. Have exact schedules (Volánbusz) to avoid long waits.
- Taxi / Private transfer (8,000-12,000 HUF (from BUD)) - Taxis or private transfers are the fastest door-to-door option from Budapest Airport or nearby cities. Expect higher fares (several thousand HUF) but reliable timing - useful for late arrivals or heavy luggage. Agree a price or use the official meter/app service.
- Car rental (From ~10,000 HUF/day) - Renting a car gives freedom to explore the Danube bend and surrounding villages. Roads are generally good; parking in Ercsi is straightforward. A car is helpful if your itinerary includes smaller villages not well served by public transport.
- Walking - Ercsi is quite walkable on foot; the centre and riverfront are compact. Walking is the easiest way to reach local shops, cafés and the Danube promenade from the station.
