Elephanta Island
Island Island near Mumbai with ancient rock-cut cave temples
A short ferry from Mumbai, Elephanta Island holds rock-cut Hindu cave temples, large Shiva sculptures and sea views; visitors arrive for the 5th-8th-century sculptures, boat trips and coastal photo opportunities.
Elephanta Island lies in Mumbai Harbour, off the coast of Mumbai in Maharashtra, India, and is best known for its group of rock-cut cave temples carved from basalt. The site contains large reliefs and sculptures dedicated primarily to Shiva and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The principal attraction is the large rock-cut complex often referred to as the main cave, which contains monumental Shaivite sculptures including a famous multi-faced Shiva (Trimurti) and numerous carved panels and pillars. Visitors frequently combine the cave visit with a short walk around the island’s shore and viewpoints.
The caves were carved in the early medieval period and are generally dated to roughly the 5th to 8th centuries, serving as major Hindu worship sites in the region before later periods. The island received the European name ‘Elephanta’ after a 16th-17th century Portuguese description that noted a large elephant statue formerly present on the island.
Elephanta Island sits in Mumbai Harbour about 10 km from central Mumbai and is reached by scheduled passenger ferries from the Gateway of India and other piers; ferry services and island facilities are seasonal and weather dependent.
- UNESCO listing and ferry: The island and its cave temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; ferries run from Mumbai (Gateway of India) taking roughly 45-60 minutes each way depending on service and weather.
- Best time to visit: Visit early in the day to avoid mid-day heat and to allow time to climb the steps up to the cave entrances and to walk the island paths before ferries return to Mumbai.
What to See #
- Main cave (Cave 1): The main rock-cut cave (often called Cave 1) contains the principal sculptural ensemble, including monumental Shiva images and carved panels representing Shaivite themes dated to the early medieval period.
- Secondary caves: Several smaller caves and shrines around the main complex contain additional reliefs and carved pillars; these are part of the same rock-cut temple group and date to the early medieval centuries.
