Type E Plug 2 pins
CEE 7/5 (French)
The Type E plug is a CEE 7/5 (French) style plug with two round pins and a female earth contact in the plug body; the socket provides a male earth pin, so it is earthed. It is rated for 220-240V at 50 Hz and is mainly used across France, Belgium, Poland and many former French colonies in Africa and elsewhere.
What Does a Type E Plug Look Like?
The Type E plug has two round pins and a female earth contact built into the plug face; the wall socket has a protruding male earth pin that mates with this contact. The pins are round rather than flat, and the plug is earthed. You can recognise it by the hole or recess for the socket earth pin on the plug and by the protruding earth pin in the corresponding wall outlet.
Where Is the Type E Plug Used?
Type E is used in 43 main countries, notably France, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Poland, and in many former French colonies in Africa and the Indian Ocean such as Tunisia, Mauritius and Senegal. It is also present in some smaller states like Monaco and Timor-Leste. Type E is only a secondary socket type in a couple of places, specifically Myanmar and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Which Plugs Fit a Type E Socket?
A Type E socket accepts Type C plugs directly. According to visitor compatibility, European plugs (listed as C, F and E) and Indian plugs (D and C) will fit a Type E socket, while plugs from the US and Canada (A/B), the UK (G), Australia and New Zealand (I), and Japan (A/B) do not fit without an adapter.
| Travelling from | Your plugs | Fits a Type E socket? |
|---|---|---|
| US & Canada | Type A/B | No, bring an adapter |
| UK & Ireland | Type G | No, bring an adapter |
| Europe | Type C/F/E | Yes, no adapter |
| Australia & NZ | Type I | No, bring an adapter |
| India | Type D/C | Yes, no adapter |
| Japan | Type A/B | No, bring an adapter |
Travel Adapters for Type E Sockets
Travellers from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan will need a plug adapter to use their devices in Type E sockets. Visitors from most of continental Europe or India often do not need an adapter for charging devices. Remember Type E supplies 220-240V at 50 Hz, so dual-voltage chargers and electronics are fine; single-voltage appliances from 100-120V countries need a voltage converter or transformer, not just an adapter.
