El-Kurru
Archaeological Site Ancient Kushite royal cemetery with small pyramids.
El-Kurru preserves Nubian royal burials and small pyramids associated with the Kingdom of Kush; archaeologists and history-minded visitors examine funerary monuments, tomb chapels and inscribed stones.
El-Kurru is an archaeological cemetery site in northern Sudan associated with the Napatan kingdom of Kush and its early royal burials. The site contains a sequence of small pyramids, tumuli and rock-cut burial chambers used by Kushite rulers during the first millennium BCE.
Scholarly excavations in the early 20th century revealed the site’s sequence of burials and funerary architecture, linking El-Kurru to the royal centres of Napata and the nearby Jebel Barkal. The layout and material culture at El-Kurru illustrate the local development of pyramid and tomb-building traditions in Nubia.
The site lies in Sudan’s Northern State on the Nile’s eastern riverbank plain, among other Napatan and Kushite archaeological sites clustered around Jebel Barkal.
- Archaeology: Excavations in the early 20th century documented the site and recovered funerary materials that helped define the Napatan royal burial tradition.
What to See #

Tips for Visiting El-Kurru #
- See El-Kurru as part of a Jebel Barkal/Karima archaeology circuit - most visits combine multiple Kushite sites, so arrange transport or a local guide from Karima to cover Kurru efficiently.
- Go early in the morning to avoid the heat and to have quieter access to the small necropolis area and tumulus remains.
- Hire a knowledgeable local guide on-site: signage and interpretation are limited, and a guide will point out key tombs, reliefs and the site's relationship to nearby Jebel Barkal.
