Eger minaret
Mosque Ottoman-era minaret surviving landmark in Eger
Eger’s Ottoman‑era minaret survives in the Hungarian town and attracts visitors interested in Ottoman history, a climb for town views and a short walk to the baroque city centre.
The Eger minaret is an Ottoman-era minaret located in the historic centre of Eger in Heves County, Hungary, and is one of the country’s surviving Turkish-era monuments.
A tall, narrow stone tower rising roughly 40 metres above street level with an internal stair that leads to a viewing gallery; it stands amid Eger’s baroque streets and near the town’s castle precinct. The minaret is a striking example of Ottoman religious architecture preserved outside its original mosque complex.
Constructed during the period of Ottoman rule in the 16th and 17th centuries, the minaret survived post-Ottoman periods when many such structures were demolished. It has been maintained as a historical monument and tourist attraction.
Set in the centre of Eger, the tower is adjacent to the city’s main historic core and within walking distance of Eger Castle and the cathedral area.
- Height and survival: The minaret rises to approximately 40 metres and is one of the best-preserved Ottoman-era minarets surviving in Hungary.
- Visitor access: Visitors can ascend a narrow stair to a viewing gallery offering views across the old town and towards the castle and cathedral precincts.
