Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeastern Iowa preserves prehistoric Native American burial and ceremonial mounds on bluffs above the Mississippi River. The site is best known for its earthen mounds arranged in animal shapes and other mound forms that reflect indigenous mound-building traditions.

There is no regular intercity rail service to the site; expect to drive from nearby towns. Trails from the visitor center are short walks (many under a mile) to overlooks and mound complexes.

• Start at the national monument's Visitor Center near Harpers Ferry/Marquette to pick up maps, check trail conditions and see the short orientation exhibits before walking the bluff trails-parking and information are concentrated there so it's the best place to begin.
• Visit right at opening on weekdays or in the hour before closing to avoid weekend and midday crowds; the mounds' low-profile landscape draws the most visitors in late morning, so early morning brings quieter trails and better light for photos.
• Don't skip the River Bluff overlooks along the main loop-many people stick to the marked effigy mounds themselves and miss the scenic Mississippi River vistas and interpretive panels a short walk from the central trailhead.
