Winterset Travel Guide

Chances of getting lost in the crowd are slim in Winterset in Madison County, as this small Iowan town has a population of less than 5,000. Chances of finding enough to keep yourself occupied for more than a couple of days are equally slim, however, as Winterset is a sleepy little place by all accounts and streets away from being what might be considered a popular tourist destination.

Winterset’s greatest appeal perhaps, is its proximity to Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa. A 45-minute drive connects the two destinations, making Winterset the kind of place that you could enjoy a trip to for a weekend of peace and tranquility while on a holiday in Des Moines. Des Moines is packed with attractions including the Blank Park Zoo, Fort Des Moines Museum, Lilac Arboretum and Children’s Forest, Des Moines Art Center and Adventureland.

The town does have some attractions of its own; however, this is really a destination in which to enjoy some peace and quiet, good food and the friendly small town ambiance that is highly tangible around the center.
