Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.
The Baltics (Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania)
Peak summer is mild rather than hot - expect 18-25°C most days, with occasional heat spikes into the high twenties. Baltic beaches around Pärnu and Palanga fill on sunny days, while Tallinn and Riga are busy with tourists and long evenings. Insects can be noticeable in marshy areas and forests, so bring repellent; light layers and a waterproof remain sensible for intermittent showers.
Poland & the Northern Plain (Poland & Belarus)
High summer is warm and increasingly humid on the plain, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that can be intense but brief; July and August highs regularly reach 25-30°C during hot spells. Beach resorts on the Baltic will be cooler than inland cities, while crowds peak at cultural festivals. Expect lively city centres; carry sun protection, a light rain jacket and reusable water to cope with heat and storms.
The Carpathians & Transylvania (southern Poland, Slovakia, western Ukraine & Romania)
Peak summer brings dramatic weather swings: warm sunny mornings can turn into heavy thunderstorms by afternoon, especially over the higher Carpathians; daytime valley temperatures often reach 20-30°C while peaks stay much cooler. Peak hiking season makes popular trails busier, and river-carved valleys offer rafting opportunities. A combination of light clothing, a warm layer and rain protection is recommended for mountain travel.
Ukraine & Moldova Lowlands (central & eastern Ukraine, Moldova)
High summer sees consistent heat waves at times, with July-August often reaching 28-33°C in central and southern Ukraine; thunderstorms provide relief but can be intense. Crowds concentrate on the Black Sea coast near Odesa and the Romanian border resorts, while inland cities are active with cultural events. Travel light, carry water, and avoid the hottest midday hours for outdoor activities.
Black Sea Coast & the Danube Plain (Romania, Bulgaria & southern Ukraine)
Peak summer heats up - July and August bring hot, humid days with highs frequently 28-33°C on the plain and coast; water temperatures are warmest and beaches are lively. Nightlife and seafood restaurants are in full swing in coastal cities; pack light clothing, broad-spectrum sunscreen, and be prepared for busy resorts and limited availability without reservations.
European Russia West of the Urals (St. Petersburg, Moscow & surrounding regions)
High summer produces warm to hot conditions with July and August sometimes hitting 25-30°C in Moscow and the surrounding plains; humidity can rise and thunderstorms are common. Cultural festivals, open-air concerts and river cruises are at their busiest. Lightweight clothes for the heat plus a rain jacket for summer storms will cover most needs in cities and nearby countryside.
