Country Weather in April

Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

The Baltics (Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania)

By late spring the region comes into its green season: daytime temperatures often reach 12-18°C, with frequent showers and brisk northerly winds on the Gulf of Finland. Parks in Vilnius and Riga fill with outdoor cafés, and Estonian islands begin to reopen ferry services; Jāņi and other Midsummer preparations are visible in town markets. Bring a warm sweater for evenings and a rain jacket - spring is unpredictable but pleasant for fewer crowds.

Poland & the Northern Plain (Poland & Belarus)

By late spring the region turns greener and more pleasant: daytime temperatures in May commonly reach 15-22°C, and long weekends draw crowds to historic centres and national parks. The Białowieża Forest and Masurian Lake District are best visited now for fewer mid-summer insects and comfortable hiking. Bring layers for cooler mornings, a rainproof shell for showers and insect repellent for lakeside hikes.

The Carpathians & Transylvania (southern Poland, Slovakia, western Ukraine & Romania)

By late spring mountain passes open fully and alpine hiking becomes pleasant: daytime temperatures in valleys often reach 10-20°C while nights remain cool. Lambing season and pastoral activity shape rural life in Maramureș and the southern Carpathians, and wildflower meadows are at their best. Bring layers for altitude change, sun protection and sturdy footwear for rocky trails.

Ukraine & Moldova Lowlands (central & eastern Ukraine, Moldova)

By late spring the region becomes pleasantly warm: Kyiv and Lviv see daytime highs often between 15-22°C and countryside roads become suitable for cycling and vineyard visits. Migratory birds return and May festivals in Moldova and western Ukraine liven up market towns. Days are ideal for city walking and rural explorations; a light sweater for evenings and sun protection will suffice.

Black Sea Coast & the Danube Plain (Romania, Bulgaria & southern Ukraine)

By late spring the coast becomes comfortably warm and lively: daytime temperatures commonly reach 18-24°C and sea temperatures start to become tolerable for swimming at sheltered beaches. Seaside towns host festivals and weekend crowds increase. Bring swimwear and a light sweater for evenings; book accommodation early for holiday weekends and plan boat trips for calmer seas.

European Russia West of the Urals (St. Petersburg, Moscow & surrounding regions)

Late spring is one of the best times for city travel: temperatures in May commonly range 10-20°C, parks explode into leaf and outdoor cafés reopen; early June sees gardens at their peak. St. Petersburg’s palaces and Moscow’s parks are very pleasant before the peak tourist season; bring a light jacket for cool mornings and an umbrella for occasional showers.
