Dowlatabad Garden

Dowlatabad Garden is an 18th-century Persian garden in Yazd province, Iran, noted for its tall windtower and formal, axial layout. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage serial site “The Persian Garden.”

The garden is arranged on a central north-south axis with a long water channel feeding pools and beds, a residential pavilion, and formal planting. The most prominent feature is the multi-channeled windcatcher, which stands 33.8 metres tall and is a rare surviving example of large traditional passive cooling architecture.

The garden was established in the late 18th century and developed by local governors as a desert-era residence and landscaped complex using traditional Persian garden engineering. Its layout and systems preserve historic approaches to water management and climate-adaptive architecture.

The garden sits on the edge of Yazd city in central Iran, within the arid plain of Yazd province. It is accessible from the city and is one of Yazd’s principal historic gardens and architectural attractions.
