Historic City of Yazd
Historical Site Ancient desert city noted for windcatchers and adobe
Desert mud-brick alleys, windcatchers and domed mosques define Yazd’s urban fabric; visitors come for the Jameh Mosque, Zoroastrian sites like the Towers of Silence, traditional qanat systems and bazaars selling textiles and confectionery.
Historic City of Yazd is a desert city in central Iran renowned for its traditional earthen architecture and extensive use of windcatchers. The historic core preserves a continuous urban fabric adapted to an arid climate and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017.
The old city is noted for its maze of narrow alleys, adobe houses, tall badgirs or windcatchers and landmark complexes such as the Jameh Mosque of Yazd and the Amir Chakhmaq façade. The nearby Dowlatabad Garden contains a very tall windcatcher and demonstrates historic passive cooling and garden design in the region.
Yazd’s architecture and urban plan developed over many centuries to manage extreme heat and scarce water, producing characteristic features such as qanat-fed courtyards and wind towers that remain in use. The city has long been a center of Zoroastrian as well as Islamic culture, with surviving religious and communal sites from different periods.
Geographically Yazd lies in central Iran on a desert plateau. The historic core sits inland from the Zagros foothills and is connected by road to major cities such as Isfahan to the northwest and Shiraz to the south; it is often approached by visitors traveling across central Iran.
