Naqsh-e Jahan Square, also known as Imam Square, is a vast 17th-century plaza in the centre of Isfahan, Iran, surrounded by major Safavid monuments. It was laid out under Shah Abbas I as the ceremonial and commercial heart of the city.

The square is flanked by the Imam (Shah) Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu Palace and the Qeysarieh bazaar gateway, making it an ensemble of architecture, religion and commerce. Wide open spaces, arcades and water features provide vantage points for viewing the surrounding façades.

Designed as a royal square for ceremonies and polo games, the layout integrated administrative, religious and commercial functions. The key buildings were constructed during the early 17th century and have undergone restoration to preserve tilework and structural elements.

Naqsh-e Jahan sits in central Isfahan, within walking distance of the citys historic core and the Zayandeh River; it remains a major visitor attraction and civic space.

• Dimensions: The square measures roughly 500 meters by 160 meters and functions as a central urban plaza surrounded by major Safavid-era monuments.
• Best times: Early morning and late afternoon light are best for photographing tilework and the square’s façades; the bazaars are busier in the middle of the day.

• Imam (Shah) Mosque: A mosque with a large tiled courtyard and a high dome forming the square’s southern architectural anchor.
• Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque: A domed mosque famous for its finely patterned tilework and originally built as a private royal mosque.
• Ali Qapu Palace: A six-storey palace with decorated reception halls that faces the square and served as the Safavid royal viewing platform.
• Qeysarieh Gate and Bazaar: The old bazaar gate and the entrance to the covered commercial complex that opens onto the square’s northern side.

Naqsh-e Jahan is in downtown Isfahan, about a 20-30 minute walk from Isfahan railway station and easily reached by taxi or local bus. The closest metro stop is Imam Hossein (line under expansion historically); in practice taxis and rideshares are the most convenient from the city center. Most hotels in the historic core are a short walk away.

• Visit just before sunset to watch the square shift from market chaos to a stage for teahouse life and families.
• Explore the arcades for traditional crafts (tile-makers, copperware) - the scene on the north side is less tourist-centric and more for locals.
