Dongdaemun Stadium was an athletics and multi-purpose sports stadium in central Seoul, located beside the historic Dongdaemun (Great East Gate). It originally opened in the 1920s and served as a major venue for sports and public events through the 20th century.
The facility hosted national football matches, athletics and large public gatherings and sat close to commercial districts around the Dongdaemun market area. The stadium complex was removed in the early 21st century and the site has been redeveloped into the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, with surrounding new cultural and retail projects.
The stadium lay in the Jung-gu district adjacent to the Dongdaemun Gate and is about a short walk from central Seoul landmarks such as the Cheonggyecheon stream and major shopping streets. The redevelopment area is well served by Seoul’s metro network.
