How to Get to Dogana#
Dogana is San Marino’s main border and commercial area on the northeastern edge of the republic. The easiest international access is via Rimini (air and rail) with a short onward bus or taxi transfer to Dogana.
Federico Fellini International Airport (RMI, Rimini): Rimini is the nearest airport; from there Dogana (the main entry area on the San Marino-Italy border) is about 20-35 minutes by road. Taxis and regional buses provide the onward link.
Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ): From Bologna take a train to Rimini and then a bus or taxi to Dogana; total journey time is roughly 1.5-2 hours depending on connections.
Train: Use Rimini Railway Station as the main rail gateway; regional trains on the Adriatic line connect Rimini with Bologna, Ancona and other cities.
Bus: Regional buses link Rimini with Dogana and the San Marino border area; from Dogana you can reach other San Marino castelli by local bus or taxi.
How to Get Around Dogana#
Dogana is normally accessed from Rimini by bus, taxi or rental car. It’s a convenient entry point with good onward bus links into the rest of San Marino, while the hilltop capital is best reached by bus, cable car (from Borgo Maggiore) or taxi.
- Taxi / Transfer (€20-€45) - Taxis from Rimini or Rimini Airport drop you at Dogana quickly and are reliable for direct transfers across the border. Useful if you have luggage or arrive late at night.
- Regional bus (€3-€8) - Scheduled buses from Rimini serve Dogana and the entrance to San Marino; they are the cost-effective option but check timetables as services can be seasonal. Buses then connect onwards into the republic.
- Car / Rental (€20+/day (rental)) - Driving to Dogana is straightforward from the A14 motorway via Rimini. Dogana has more commercial parking than the hilltop centre, making it useful for shopping or switching to local buses.
- Local bus network (€1.50-€5) - From Dogana local buses connect to other San Marino towns and the capital; handy for short hops and reaching tourist sites without the hillside climb of the old town.
- Walking - Dogana itself is primarily a transit and commercial zone; short walks work for shopping or catching buses, but for sightseeing you’ll be walking uphill toward the historic centre.
