Monte Titano is a rocky limestone ridge and the highest point in the Republic of San Marino, crowned by the country’s historic fortifications and the capital’s old town. The mountain is central to the microstate’s identity and contains its principal monuments.

The ridge-top walk links viewpoints, fortifications and the compact historic centre, offering panoramic views over surrounding Italian provinces. The Three Towers sit along the ridge and are visited for their medieval architecture and viewing platforms.

Trails and pedestrian routes connect the summit area with the city below, and the mountain’s slopes contain streets, churches and civic buildings concentrated in a compact historic ensemble. The site is compact and typically visited on foot.

Monte Titano has been occupied since antiquity and became the site of the small community that developed into the Republic of San Marino; fortifications were built on its peaks in the medieval period and preserved as national symbols.

The mountain rises within the territory of San Marino and overlooks neighbouring Italian regions; its summit and ridge form the core of the capital and are accessible by road and pedestrian paths.

Monte Titano sits above the City of San Marino. By car from nearby Rimini (Italy) take the SS72 toward San Marino - the drive is about 20-25 km and takes roughly 30-40 minutes depending on traffic. Regular buses run from Rimini’s bus/train station into San Marino (journey ~30-45 minutes); once in the city center the castle towers on Monte Titano are a short uphill walk (typically 5-20 minutes depending on which tower you visit).

• Take the Borgo Maggiore cable car up to the City of San Marino rather than driving - it drops you a short walk from the main historic center and avoids the steep, narrow road and parking search at the summit.
• Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the bulk of day‑trippers from nearby Rimini; those hours also give the best light for photos across the Adriatic and Emilia‑Romagna.
• Don't miss the three fortress towers - Guaita and Cesta offer the clearest panoramas (Cesta houses the Museum of Ancient Arms) and are more rewarding than lingering only in the main piazza.
• Plan your route to include a walk along the city walls toward Porta San Francesco so you get wider views; many visitors spend all their time near Piazza della Libertà and miss these outlooks.
