Djémila (ancient Cuicul) is the archaeological remains of a Roman town in north-eastern Algeria, notable for well-preserved streets, temples and houses. The site provides a clear example of Roman urbanism adapted to a mountainous setting and preserves multiple phases of Roman building.
Key features include a paved forum and civic complex, a theatre, several well-preserved temples and residential quarters with visible house plans. The compact arrangement of monuments lets visitors follow the town’s primary axes and civic functions on foot.
The town was founded in the 1st century CE under Roman rule and saw major development during the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It declined after the Roman period but retains substantial masonry and plan evidence that have been the focus of archaeological study and conservation since the 19th and 20th centuries.
Djémila is located on a highland plateau in Sétif Province, roughly 30-35 km northeast of the city of Sétif, surrounded by rolling hills and agricultural land.
- Roman origin: Established as the Roman town of Cuicul in the 1st century CE and expanded through the 2nd and 3rd centuries with temples, basilicas and public squares.
- UNESCO status: Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the quality and preservation of its Roman urban remains set on a highland plateau.

Tips for Visiting Djémila #
- Go in the cooler light of morning or late afternoon to see Djémila's tiered streets and houses with good contrast - midday flattens the stonework and makes uphill walks more arduous.
- Begin at the visitor entrance and follow the labeled route uphill to the forum and temples; the site is laid out on terraces and stopping at the intermediate viewpoints helps you appreciate the Roman urban adaptation to the slope.
- Don't rush past the small on-site displays and panels - the explanatory plaques and recovered artifacts in the visitor area provide context that makes the ruins' layout and construction techniques much clearer.
