Diu Island
Island Island territory in Gujarat with Portuguese heritage
Off Gujarat’s coast, Diu Island draws visitors for Portuguese forts, Nagoa and Ghoghla beaches, colonial churches and fresh seafood stalls along the quay.
Diu Island is a small island off the southern coast of Gujarat in western India, administered as part of the union territory that includes Daman and Diu. It is known for its Portuguese colonial-era architecture, coastal fortress, and beaches, and was under Portuguese control until it was incorporated into India in 1961.
The island’s compact scale concentrates points of interest within a few kilometres of the main town: a coastal fortification, churches and colonial buildings, and several beaches including a well-known crescent beach used for swimming and sunbathing. The setting is coastal with calm bays and rocky headlands.
Portuguese settlers built and strengthened fortifications and churches during their centuries of presence; after 1961 the island became part of India and developed modest tourist facilities while retaining its heritage buildings. Over time tourism and local fishing have become mainstays of the island economy.
Geographically the island lies off the Kathiawar/Saurashtra coast in the Arabian Sea, separated from Gujarat mainland by a short channel and connected by road links; it is part of India’s western seaboard and accessible by road and ferry from nearby coastal towns.
- Colonial history: Former Portuguese possession until 1961, retaining visible colonial-era architecture and churches alongside modern Indian administration.
- Visitor focus: Popular for several sandy beaches and a compact historic town, making it suitable for short coastal stays rather than long overland journeys.
What to See #
- Diu Fort: A Portuguese-era coastal fortress featuring ramparts and gun emplacements overlooking the sea; the fort dominates the island's main town and shoreline.
- Nagoa Beach: A crescent-shaped sandy beach on the island's sheltered side, known for calm waters and swimming opportunities; a short drive from the island's main settlement.
How to Get to Diu Island #
Diu Airport (DIU) has limited flights to major Indian cities. Diu is also reachable by road via National Highway links from Gujarat, with a causeway connecting it to the mainland; the drive from Rajkot or Somnath takes several hours.
Tips for Visiting Diu Island #
- Fly into Diu Airport (DIU) or drive using NH51; the island is connected to the mainland by road so self-drive or taxis are straightforward.
- Visit the Diu Fort at sunrise to avoid heat and tour buses; watch for sea spray on the fort's western walls.
