Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park

Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park is a Turkish national park that includes the Dilek (Milli) Peninsula and the adjoining Büyük Menderes river delta. The park protects a mix of steep Aegean coastline, pine-covered hills and extensive delta wetlands.

The area offers coastal hiking routes, secluded beaches and birdwatching in the wetlands and delta; habitats range from Mediterranean maquis on the peninsula to reedbeds and lagoons in the delta. Visitors use marked trails and designated picnic and beach areas.

The park was established to protect the peninsula’s coastal and terrestrial habitats together with the wetland ecology of the Büyük Menderes Delta, which supports numerous bird species and other wildlife.

It sits on the Aegean coast of western Turkey in Aydın Province, immediately south of the resort town of Kuşadası and facing the Greek island of Samos across the sea.

• Best time to visit: Combine coastal hiking on pine-covered trails with birdwatching in the delta; spring and autumn are best for migratory birdwatching and comfortable temperatures.
