How to Get to Depok#

Depok (Sleman, Yogyakarta) is accessed primarily via Yogyakarta’s airports and the city’s main train stations (Tugu and Lempuyangan). Arrival choices include flights into Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) or Adisutjipto (JOG), and intercity trains to Tugu/Lempuyangan; transfers to Depok are usually by bus, taxi or ride‑hail.

By Air

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA): The region’s main international airport, located in Kulon Progo about 40-50 km from central Yogyakarta/Depok (Sleman). From YIA the DAMRI airport shuttle runs to Yogyakarta (Malioboro/Giwangan) - fares are commonly around IDR 35,000-50,000 and the journey normally takes about 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. Metered taxis or app-based car rides (Grab/GoCar) are faster but more expensive - expect roughly IDR 120,000-250,000 and around 45-75 minutes to reach Depok/Yogyakarta city centre.

Adisutjipto Airport (JOG): The older airport adjacent to central Yogyakarta, much closer to Depok (Sleman). It is served by Trans Jogja city buses (single-trip fare IDR 3,500) with journeys of roughly 15-30 minutes into the city, while taxis or app cars typically cost around IDR 30,000-70,000 and take 15-30 minutes. Note that many scheduled commercial flights have moved to YIA, so check which airport your flight uses.

By Train & Bus

Train: Yogyakarta is served by Stasiun Tugu (Yogyakarta Tugu) and Stasiun Lempuyangan; these are the main arrival points for intercity trains from Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and elsewhere. Trains from Jakarta generally take about 7-8 hours; fares depend on class (economy to executive) and vary widely - check KA (Kereta Api Indonesia) for current prices and schedules. Local/regional trains and some shuttle services also connect Yogyakarta with nearby towns.

Bus: Intercity buses use Terminal Giwangan (often called Giwangan bus terminal) for long-distance services to and from cities across Java; travel times and fares depend on route and operator. Within the Yogyakarta area the Trans Jogja network is the main city bus system (single fare IDR 3,500) and is a cheap way to reach parts of the city, though last-mile connections to smaller villages like Depok may require a short ojek/taxi ride.

How to Get Around Depok#

Navigating Depok (Sleman) is easiest with a mix of app-based bikes/cars and a rented scooter for local exploration - these are the most flexible options. Use Trans Jogja and trains for cheap, reliable travel between Yogyakarta and surrounding towns, then rely on ojeks or taxis for the last mile.

  • Train (Tugu & Lempuyangan) (Varies by class (economy → executive)) - Intercity trains stop at Stasiun Tugu and Stasiun Lempuyangan in Yogyakarta. Trains are comfortable for longer trips (e.g., Jakarta-Yogyakarta takes about 7-8 hours) and are often the most reliable option for overnight or daytime intercity travel. Book in advance on the KAI website for best prices and seat choices.
  • Trans Jogja (city bus) (IDR 3,500) - Trans Jogja is the main affordable city-bus network; single fares are IDR 3,500 and routes cover large parts of Yogyakarta city. Buses are cheap and predictable but routes and stop spacing mean you may still need a short taxi/ojek to reach Depok or village locations. Expect buses to be busiest during rush hours.
  • Taxi & Ride-hail (Grab / Gojek car) (IDR 15,000-250,000 (depending on distance)) - App-based car services (Grab/GoCar) and regulated taxis are convenient for door-to-door travel, luggage, and nighttime trips. Short inner-city rides are inexpensive, but transfers from YIA or long trips across the region can cost substantially more - surge pricing applies during peak times. Payment via app or cash/taxi meter is possible.
  • Motorbike taxi (ojek) - GrabBike / Gojek (IDR 5,000-40,000) - App motorbike taxis are the fastest way to weave through traffic for short hops and are widely used for last‑mile connections from bus stops or stations. They’re cheap and frequent, but luggage and safety in wet weather can be limiting factors. Negotiate only through the app rather than with street drivers for fixed fares and tracking.
  • Scooter rental (IDR 50,000-100,000 per day) - Renting a motorbike is the easiest way to explore rural areas around Depok and nearby attractions on your own schedule. Daily rental rates are commonly around IDR 50,000-100,000; always check the bike’s condition, carry an international or Indonesian driving permit where required, and wear a helmet. Not recommended if you’re uncomfortable with Indonesian traffic conditions.
  • Walking - Depok and many nearby villages are compact and walkable for short errands and sightseeing. Walking is pleasant for close distances and short visits, but for trips to attractions outside the village or after dark you’ll want a motorbike or car for safety and speed.
