Deir el-Medina
Archaeological Site Ancient New Kingdom village housing tomb artisans
Deir el-Medina on Luxor’s west bank preserves the village of New Kingdom tomb workers, with well-kept houses, tombs and inscriptions. Archaeology visitors come for intimate insights into ancient artisans’ daily life and funerary practices.
Deir el-Medina is an archaeological site on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes (modern Luxor) that preserves the remains of an ancient village of craftsmen who worked on the royal tombs. It was the home of the artisans who constructed and decorated many New Kingdom tombs in the Valley of the Kings.
The village was established during the New Kingdom and was occupied primarily by the workers assigned to royal tomb construction from the 18th through the 20th Dynasties. Over time the settlement was abandoned and later explored and excavated by archaeologists, producing a rich archive of texts and material culture.
Situated on the west bank of the Nile at Thebes (modern Luxor), Deir el-Medina lies near the Valley of the Kings and other funerary sites on the desert edge outside the city.
- Written records: The site preserves large numbers of ostraca and graffiti-day-to-day records and inscriptions-that are important for understanding New Kingdom workshop life and administration.
What to See #
- The village (worker houses): A compact village of stone and mud-brick houses where New Kingdom craftsmen and their families lived; many houses preserve floor plans and domestic features.
- Tombs and necropolis: A cemetery and rock-cut tombs for the village's artisans and foremen, containing painted scenes and inscriptions that illuminate daily life and religious practice.
How to Get to Deir el-Medina #
Deir el-Medina (the workers’ village) is on the West Bank of the Nile opposite Luxor, adjacent to the Valley of the Kings. From Luxor city (train station or airport) take a taxi, minibus or organised tour across to the West Bank; the drive is typically about 20-30 minutes (roughly 10 km) depending on your starting point. The archaeological area is on the same West Bank road as the Valley of the Kings, and is within short walking distance of the Valley’s entrance once you reach the West Bank complex.
Tips for Visiting Deir el-Medina #
- Go early on a West Bank touring day to combine Deir el-Medina with nearby Valley of the Kings sites and avoid the midday heat and larger tour groups that concentrate at the royal tombs.
- Deir el-Medina's value is in its worker-tombs and daily-life inscriptions; ask the site guards or your guide which specific tombs are open that day (openings rotate) so you don't miss the best-preserved painted chapels.
- Pair your visit with a knowledgeable Egyptologist guide who can explain the ostraca, household layouts and inscriptions - these daily-life details are what most visitors overlook when rushing through the West Bank.
