Tips for Visiting Dazu Rock Carvings #
- Aim for early morning or late afternoon light at the Baodingshan group to see the carvings with fewer visitors and softer shadows; Baodingshan is the largest, most visited complex so see it first and then move on to the quieter Beishan and Nanshan groups.
- Buy tickets at the main Dazu tourist/ticket center near Baodingshan and use the shuttle/short local transfers to move between the separate carving sites rather than trying to walk them all in one go.
- Don't rush past the side galleries: many visitors focus on the main cliff faces but smaller grottoes and inscriptions off the main routes contain detailed scenes and inscriptions that are easier to study when crowds thin in the afternoon.
