Major clusters include the Baodingshan group, noted for large high-relief figures and didactic scenes, and Beishan, which contains numerous niches and carved tableaux; other clusters such as Nanshan and Shizhuanshan add to the site’s breadth. The ensemble contains thousands of carved images and many accompanying inscriptions, making it important for the study of medieval Chinese religion and art.

How to Get to Dazu Rock Carvings #

From Chongqing: Dazu Rock Carvings are reached from Chongqing city by road in about 2-3 hours (roughly 160-180 km) west of downtown Chongqing. Regular long‑distance buses run from Chongqing’s long‑distance bus stations to Dazu (Dazu County); from Dazu bus or rail stop take a short taxi or local bus onward to the main carving complexes (Baoding/Beishan area). Driving is the most direct option; once in Dazu follow local signage to the Dazu Rock Carvings scenic area.

Tips for Visiting Dazu Rock Carvings #

  • Aim for early morning or late afternoon light at the Baodingshan group to see the carvings with fewer visitors and softer shadows; Baodingshan is the largest, most visited complex so see it first and then move on to the quieter Beishan and Nanshan groups.
  • Buy tickets at the main Dazu tourist/ticket center near Baodingshan and use the shuttle/short local transfers to move between the separate carving sites rather than trying to walk them all in one go.
  • Don't rush past the side galleries: many visitors focus on the main cliff faces but smaller grottoes and inscriptions off the main routes contain detailed scenes and inscriptions that are easier to study when crowds thin in the afternoon.
