Main image

Danube-Ipoly National Park is a protected area in northern Hungary that conserves sections of the Danube river corridor and adjacent hill ranges. The park covers riverine wetlands, forested hills and karst features north of Budapest.

Key attractions include scenic viewpoints over the Danube bend near Visegrád, a network of hiking trails through the Pilis and Börzsöny hills, and a variety of caves and karst features. The park supports recreational walking, wildlife observation and visits to small historical sites and lookout points.

Created in the late 20th century, the park brought together several protected areas to form a larger management unit focused on conserving the Danube landscape and contiguous upland habitats. Conservation work includes habitat protection, visitor management and research on regional biodiversity.

The park lies north of Budapest in Pest County and neighbouring areas, extending along the Danube Bend and into the inland Pilis and Börzsöny ranges, and reaches toward the Hungarian-Slovak border in places.

  • Establishment and scope: The national park was established in 1997 to protect landscapes along the Danube bend and adjoining hill ranges north of Budapest, combining riverine and forest habitats.
