How to Get to Dalcahue
Dalcahue on Chiloé Island is reached either via Puerto Montt (PMC) with a ferry crossing, or by flying into Mocopulli (MHC) near Castro and continuing by road. There is no rail - buses and ferries form the backbone of public transport.
El Tepual / Puerto Montt (PMC): Puerto Montt is the main mainland gateway for Chiloé. From Puerto Montt drive and ferry across the Chacao Channel (ferry from Pargua) then continue to Dalcahue; total travel time is typically 2-3 hours including the ferry, and bus fares from Puerto Montt to Dalcahue are commonly CLP 3,000-8,000.
Mocopulli / Castro (MHC): Mocopulli Airport (serving Castro and parts of Chiloé) is the closest airfield; from MHC take a taxi or local bus to Dalcahue in about 20-45 minutes. Local taxi fares are modest; buses between Castro and Dalcahue are frequent and inexpensive.
Train: There is no passenger rail service to Chiloé.
Bus / Ferry: Long‑distance buses run from Puerto Montt to the island ferry terminals; after the short Pargua-Chacao ferry crossing you continue by road to Dalcahue. Within Chiloé, regular local buses connect Castro, Ancud and Dalcahue; fares are low (often a few thousand CLP) and journeys are typically short.
How to Get Around Dalcahue #
Dalcahue is compact and easily explored on foot; the ferry terminal connects to the island of Quinchao and local boat services link nearby islands. Regional minibuses and collective taxis serve inter-island routes, though schedules can be sparse.
