How to Get to Calbuco

Calbuco is reached most easily via Puerto Montt (El Tepual, PMC). From Puerto Montt the usual onward options are intercity buses, colectivos and private transfers - travel is short but sometimes involves ferry/bridge segments across the channels.

By Air

El Tepual / Puerto Montt (PMC): The nearest major airport is El Tepual (PMC) in Puerto Montt. From PMC you can take a taxi or colectivo into Puerto Montt city centre (15-25 minutes) and then intercity buses or colectivos to Calbuco; the door-to-door journey typically takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on connections and traffic.

Castro / Chiloé (ZCO): Castro/Chiloé (Cerrillos) is a secondary option if you are visiting Chiloé first. From Castro you must travel by road and (depending on route) cross by ferry or drive around the channel; expect at least 2-3 hours to reach Calbuco.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular passenger rail service that serves Calbuco; rail travel is not a practical option for this route.

Bus / Colectivo: Regular intercity buses and colectivos run from Puerto Montt’s bus terminal (Terminal Rodoviario) to Calbuco; journey time is commonly about 45-75 minutes from Puerto Montt, depending on whether the route takes the direct road or uses any short ferry crossings. Taxis and private transfers from Puerto Montt are also widely available for a faster door-to-door trip.

How to Get Around Calbuco #

Calbuco is compact and easy to walk around in the town centre; streets, waterfront and markets are within short distances. Local taxis and shared vehicles connect Calbuco with nearby towns (Puerto Montt and surrounding villages), and there are small boat services from the port to nearby islands and coastal points. Expect limited public-transport frequency outside peak hours; taxis are affordable for short hops (a few thousand CLP) and buses/colectivos are the cheapest option. Bring a rain jacket in wet months and check boat schedules in advance for island runs.
