Chonchi Travel Guide
City City in Los Lagos Region, Chile
Chiloé port town with painted wooden churches and stilt houses; people come for curanto feasts, local artisans, ferry crossings to Castro, and muddy trails into nearby fern-blanketed forests.
Why Visit Chonchi? #
On Chiloé Island, Chonchi reveals the archipelago’s blend of Indigenous and Spanish influences through wooden churches and colourful waterfront palafitos. The town’s Church of San Carlos and its plazas set a contemplative tone, and local cooks prepare curanto-an earth-oven shellfish-and-meat feast that defines island cuisine. Fishermen still land catches at the quay, making Chonchi a place for folklore, maritime traditions and slow exploration.
