Dahlak Kebir is the largest island in the Dahlak Archipelago off the coast of Eritrea in the Red Sea. It is the archipelago’s principal island and contains settlements, historical ruins and local fishing communities.
The island is surrounded by extensive coral reefs and clear Red Sea waters that support snorkeling and diving habitats. Local livelihoods are traditionally based on fishing and small-scale tourism related to the marine environment.
Geographically the island lies in the Red Sea off Eritrea’s coast near the port town of Massawa and forms the largest landmass in the Dahlak group.

How to Get to Dahlak Kebir #
Dahlak Kebir (Dahlak Kebir Island) is reached by boat from the Eritrean mainland port of Massawa. Passenger dhows and small ferries run seasonally from Massawa to islands in the Dahlak Archipelago; crossings take a few hours depending on weather and vessel. Boats land at the island’s small village/jetty, from which the main settlement and beaches are a short walk.

- Access to Dahlak Kebir is normally by boat from Massawa-book transport and any island stays through operators in Massawa rather than expecting regular scheduled ferries.
- Visit in the dry season (roughly November-May) when seas are calmer and visibility for snorkeling and diving is best.
- Arrange a guided boat or dive operator to reach the best coral reefs and to learn about the islands' history and communities; many visitors only see the main settlement and miss the rich underwater sites.
