Cyzicus
Archaeological Site Ancient city on the Sea of Marmara, ruins remain
An ancient city on the Sea of Marmara’s southern shore, Cyzicus presents archaeological remains from Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods; visitors examine ruins and local museums in Balıkesir province.
Cyzicus was an ancient city in classical Mysia, located on or near the Kapıdağ Peninsula on the southern coast of the Sea of Marmara in what is now Balıkesir Province, Turkey. It was an important regional centre in the Greek and Roman periods.
In antiquity Cyzicus prospered through maritime trade and local manufacture, issuing its own coinage and participating in wider Hellenic networks. Today the site is of archaeological interest though much of the ancient urban fabric lies beneath later occupation or agricultural land.
The city experienced successive periods of Greek, Hellenistic and Roman control and was integrated into the Roman provincial system. Over centuries its importance declined and visible remains are fragmented.
Cyzicus’s remains sit on the Kapıdağ Peninsula area near modern towns on the southern Sea of Marmara coast, within Balıkesir Province.
- Antiquity: An ancient Greek city of Mysia known in antiquity for its commerce and coinage, now an archaeological site with limited visible remains.
Tips for Visiting Cyzicus #
- Approach Cyzicus from the nearby town of Erdek and plan to visit early in the morning when coastal light is best and the summer heat is lower; many of the visible ruins are spread along the Kapıdağ peninsula rather than concentrated in one museum complex.
- Combine a visit to the archaeological remains with a stop at nearby Lake Manyas (Kuş Cenneti) - it's an easy same-day pairing and you'll often see far fewer visitors at the ruins than at the bird sanctuary.
- Expect limited on-site facilities and signage: bring a good map or GPS of the Kapıdağ/Erdek area and allow time to walk between dispersed remains rather than assuming a single enclosed site.
Best Time to Visit Cyzicus #
