Cusuco National Park is a mountainous cloud-forest protected area in Cortés Department, northwestern Honduras, recognised for very high biodiversity and numerous endemic species. The park protects steep, forested terrain that supports cloud forest ecosystems and rich understory flora.

Trails and steep forested ridges provide opportunities for birdwatching and observing cloud-forest plants, epiphytes and amphibians; the park is sought by researchers and specialist birders rather than large-scale tourism. Access is often over steep, rugged ground and conditions can be humid and wet.

Cusuco was set aside to conserve its montane forests and the species they support; the area has attracted scientific attention because of its many endemic amphibians and vulnerability to fungal disease and habitat change. Management focuses on protecting remaining forest and fauna.

The park lies in the highlands of northwestern Honduras within Cortés Department, occupying steep slopes and ridgelines of the regional mountain system. It sits inland from the northern coast in a remote, forested portion of the department.

  • Biodiversity: The park is notable for high amphibian and bird endemism and is one of Honduras's important cloud-forest remnants.
  • Conservation concern: Populations of some amphibians in the park have been affected by chytrid fungus, making conservation efforts and restricted access important.

How to Get to Cusuco National Park #

Cusuco lies roughly 40-60 km southwest of San Pedro Sula depending on the trailhead. Most visitors drive from San Pedro Sula (roughly 1.5-2.5 hours) toward Santa Cruz de Yojoa and then switch to unpaved mountain roads; 4x4 is recommended. Local guides and conservation NGOs in San Pedro Sula or La Unión can arrange access and permits for the more remote trails.

Tips for Visiting Cusuco National Park #

  • Hire a local guide from San Pedro Sula or La Unión - trails are poorly marked and guides know microhabitats and birding spots.
  • Start at dawn for the best chance to see highland birds and cloud forest activity; midday clouds can shroud viewpoints.
  • Bring insect repellent and lightweight rain gear - showers can appear suddenly, even in the dry season.
  • Respect research areas: parts of the park have active biodiversity surveys and restricted access.
